TL;DR
Online voting in Ghana takes just a few minutes. Find the event's voting page or USSD code, select the person you want to support, choose your vote count, pay by mobile money or card, and confirm. Your vote is counted right away. This tutorial walks through the exact steps for both web and USSD voting, plus what to do if your vote doesn't go through.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you vote, have these three things ready:
- The event's voting link or USSD short code (shared by the organizer)
- The name or unique code of the contestant or nominee you want to support
- A mobile money account or card to pay for your votes
Having these ready before you start makes the whole process faster, especially near a voting deadline when traffic is high.
How to Vote Online on the Web: Step by Step
- Open the event's voting page in your browser.
- Search for the contestant or nominee by name or code.
- Choose how many votes you want to cast.
- Select your payment method — mobile money or card.
- Confirm the payment on your phone or card reader.
- Watch for a confirmation message and see your vote added to the live count.
How to Vote by USSD: Step by Step
- Dial the event's USSD short code from any phone.
- Select "Vote" from the menu.
- Enter the contestant's name or code, or pick from the list shown.
- Choose your vote count.
- Confirm the payment with your mobile money PIN.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS showing your vote was counted.
USSD sessions time out after a short wait, so it helps to have the contestant's code ready before you dial. If you want a deeper look at how this technology works behind the scenes, see our USSD voting platform explained guide.
Voting From Outside Ghana
If you are supporting someone from outside the country, web voting with card payment is your best option, since USSD only works on Ghanaian phone networks. The steps are the same as web voting above — just make sure your card supports international online payments.
What to Do If Your Vote Doesn't Go Through
- Check your mobile money balance. A failed payment is often just an insufficient balance.
- Retry after a minute. Traffic spikes near deadlines can cause temporary delays.
- Check your network signal. A weak signal can interrupt a USSD session mid-way.
- Look for a confirmation message before trying again. Voting twice for the same attempt can lead to a duplicate charge if the first one actually went through.
A Simple Checklist Before You Vote
- Confirm you have the correct contestant name or code
- Confirm you have the voting link or USSD short code
- Confirm your mobile money balance or card is ready
- Cast your vote using either the web or USSD steps above
- Wait for your confirmation message before voting again
